Highlight 1: SMZDPY's 10th Anniversary Campus Tour at Sunway University College (2019)
Whenever there is a hosting back in university, especially with Sunway University Buddhist Society 双威大学佛学会, I would be the first one to say "yes"! I'm a big fan of the local Buddhist band - 生命中的朋友 SMZDPY, as the band is part of my growing up in my secondary school years.
Fast forward to 2019, when I knew SMZDPY was coming to have a campus tour as part of their 10th anniversary. I got really excited! I still remembered rushing from another event - 2359 - an event on climate change by my PR course mates in the August 2017 batch. I rushed from the first to the Mezzanine floor - led to the Graduate Centre through one of the linkage bridges. It was raining and luckily some of the students were kind to keep an eye on me.
The moment I entered the room, there they were - SMZDPY! After settling in, the event began. It's the goal I set for, it's ticked off from the list!
I also sang with them at the end and I love singing!
Highlight 2: Disability inclusion in the Workforce Inception Workshop hosted by UNDP in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darrusalam (May 2024)
Fast forward to 2024, I got my first-ever office event hosting when I was a United Nations Volunteer as a Digital Communications Officer (May 2022 - December 2025).
The Inclusive, Growth and Prosperity (IGP) team tasked me to be an emcee for their workshop, it was on disability inclusion in the workforce in Malaysia. I said yes straightaway without thinking twice.
We went through the script, I even added a Malay poem or known as pantun to open the event. The government people who were present at the event said: "Kar Marn, if my boss was here, he would truly enjoy it because he loves Malay poems," I still remembered getting the names right of fellow UN colleagues at that time (tip: remember to confirm people's names and how to pronounce it right).
The best part was after lunch where everyone started to get energetic, there is a colleague from Japan, and I incorporated with a bit of Japanese to make it lighthearted. (tip: it is best to incorporate the languages of the host and guests' origins to make them welcomed and warmed).
The event was a success! That was my last emcee and only time during my work with UNDP in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.
Bonus: Panelist for Sunway PAIR (SPAIR) on Quality Education (October 2023)
Bonus time! In October 2023, I was invited by my university alma mater - Sunway University, to share my personal views on SDG 4: Quality Education, hosted by Sunway PAIR also known as SPAIR. It was less than a week after I was invited by my own course department to share my experiences as a senior when I was a student on campus. I graduated with a communication degree.
That's my emcee highlights from my past events - from campus to the working world. It's not all the glitz and glamour, behind-the-scenes it's all about team effort to make everything a success!
