Three months in the Malaysian Emcee community, the time for me to make this event into a simple request at Artivo's 7th Art Exhibition and Award Ceremony with the theme - Little Hearts of Tomorrow at Menara Ken TTDI.
The Preparation
Khai Shuang contacted me that there was a kids' art award ceremony and asked whether I'm interested to take on the event as her partner in hosting. I looked at the date on my calendar; I said yes and marked the event down.
We had a Zoom meeting, Pau Ling - the person in charge - gave us a brief on what was going to be happening on that day itself. It was a kids' event, in my mind thinking: "I should be okay, I have dealt with kids at Sunday classes,"
Oh, I was wrong, there were some preparations to be done before the big day. To make sure I didn't go tongue tied on the event day itself, I wrote a draft script and some questions to be asked to families who were attending the event.
Khai Shuang and I did a quick rehearsal online though Zoom, I could feel myself being tensed up! Yes, I do still get the nerves even though I did perform on stage a few times, but emcee was just small part of it, majority of me is singing. "It's okay, relax! It's okay to be nervous! It's a family event, imagine you are casually talking to anyone in a conversation," said Khai Shuang.
I was so nervous that I made sure I went through everything and slept at 2am days before the event (disclaimer: please sleep early!).
The Award Ceremony
On the event day itself, my parents dropped me off at Menara Ken TTDI. Before the event, I went through everything again and it was showtime!
I still do get the nerves when I was explaining the stations which parents and children who were at the event. Each session only lasted for an hour for the branches. We did ask some families on their journey with Artivo and the growth they have seen on the kids.
It was an award ceremony, most kids really went all out with their outfits, most of them wore traditional costumes - which is rare for us to see nowadays in kids - I'm glad we are keeping the Malaysian spirit alive to these kids - the future generation of the nation. I looked at myself - in a pink shirt, long pants, a unity pin - to mark the upcoming National Day (on 31 August). I thought "Wow, the kids really knew their stuffs in dressing up!"
It's a co-hosting event, I observed how the event was run as a whole. I do love the cheerleaders with their clappers when kids had completed their five stations. Khai Shuang was encouraging me: "Go on, you can do this! You'll be okay!" I was nervous but I did the best in announcing the stations.
After some adjustments, we got our rhythm and the rest of the event went on smoothly. The event ended on time and everyone was tired but happy that this event was a success!
Lesson Learned
At any emcee events, there will be last minute changes to ensure the event goes well. I thought I would be panicking when it came to changes but I managed to stay calmed.
